SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS

In an industry managing trillions of dollars, investment managers’ decisions directly and indirectly affect countless lives, the environment and the overall fabric of life every day. The purpose of the Sustainability Award is to assess fund managers’ ability to manage medium- to long-term environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities.

The categories available this year are:

SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT

The Sustainable Investment Award recognizes an investment management company that demonstrates well-rounded success in integrating ESG into their investment activities.

Successful candidates have the following attributes:

  • Commitment: The fund manager has an explicit commitment to applying environmental, social, and governance (ESG) analysis to the funds being managed across the board … for the full document, please see contact details below.
  • ESG Policies and Procedures: There are clearly disclosed policies and procedures for integrating ESG information and metrics into the investment process… for the full document, please see contact details below.
  • Scope of Application: The application of the fund manager’s ESG policies and procedures to specific asset classes is clear, and whether … for the full document, please see contact details below.

For the jurors’ reference, our research partner MSCI will produce an ESG report on the flagship fund.

RISK EXPOSURE

This award looks at the extent to which the portfolio is exposed to environmental and governance risks that may cause intended risks to investors.

At our paper submission portal, please fill in the brief questionnaire, provide details of a flagship fund that best exemplifies management of the risk exposures mentioned below and provide the documents listed. Please also explain how your policies, principles and investment approach address revenue exposures of underlying investees to the following areas:

For the jurors’ reference, our research partner MSCI will produce an ESG report on the flagship fund. MSCI’s ESG analysis measures the portfolio’s exposure, by market value, to companies involved with fossil fuels, and exposure to companies whose operations are typically highly water intensive. The analysis will also measure the portfolio’s exposure to companies with a range of corporate governance practices related to board, pay, ownership and control, and accounting.

IMPACT INVESTING AWARD

This award considers an investment manager’s approach and ability to create or catalyze positive social and/or environmental change. Your approach may emphasize either social or environmental impact, or both.

To participate, your flagship fund (the fund which best demonstrates an ability to create positive social or/and environmental value) should have a material exposure to businesses that address social or/and environmental challenges through their products and services. The underlying companies’ activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Financial inclusion
  • Combating diseases

VALUES ALIGNMENT AWARD

This award considers the portfolio’s revenue exposure to companies flagged for controversial business involvement, global norms violations, and religious compliance.

MSCI’s ESG analysis measures the portfolio’s revenue exposures to adult entertainment, alcohol, gambling, direct predatory lending, firearms involvement, customer, labor, and human rights, Islamic compliance, Catholic, global compact compliance violation, and other relevant areas.
